Neneh Cherry & Youssou N’Dour – 7 Seconds

I mean, what can you say? Neneh Cherry? I can tell you that i stare so longingly sometimes at my original 12 inch version of Neneh Cherry – Buffalo Soldier – It usually just sits right on the outside of my record bag, it’s got some scribbles on it – some numbers or whatever – but thankfully, no scratches. I only bring it out on special occasions. It’s actually tricky banging that one into a set, mix-wise – and getting out of it as to, it sends the dancefloor wacky… -It’s difficult to follow it up. Every DJ treasures his records, but, like sons and daughters, some are more special than others.

This song was quite late on in Neneh Cherry’s career, she’s been rocking the show for years, way back… She’s a good-looking lady, that’s for sure. I just love the simplicity of this video, but I swear, every time I watch it, like a well-used Stanton Cartridge, her teeth get pointier. No w. I’m not going to accuse Neneh Cherry of being a vampire, she’s far too cool for that nonsense. I can’ t talk because I can fully remove a few teeth after the odd accident that I’ve had in life. They are quite good things really. But, Neneh’s voice is just so beautiful and this is such a well-crafted song. The English and French don’t really do much collaboration since ‘Old Boney”s time when we sort collaborated quite a lot at places like Waterloo and Trafalgar and there’s quite a long history of collaborating in similar fashion in places like Agincourt and they even caused trouble in this country in a place called Hastings where I believe John Digweed hails from. Some French bird called Jean d’Arc liked collaborating with British men, but this situation is reversed as it’s a Brit bird, Neneh Cherry, collaborating in a friendly fashion with Youssou N’Dour. The production on the song, the lyrics, the way they swap vocal roles, it’s just neat and perfect and ‘7 Seconds’ just sums up the heights of the music era in the 1990s where I was out on the scene as a teenager and there wasn’t smart phones or social media, hardly even an internet. We actually did real things and were social. It was a mass movement of people of all walks of life, fashion, music, art, culture – it all intertwined and I think the world was a better place. Yes, we all yearn for the past, but without understanding the past we cannot build a better future. It hasn’t vanished that life. most people who lived it are still here. This song is, to me, about change and taking control of your life. I love the French language and to hear the English and French combined must have inspired many young foreign language learners from both sides of the divide. I can’t see how a song like this could be made today in the climate of Brexit and the sort of hate mob rule and autocracy everywhere. Freedom, France, Britain, Europe, music at its best. Save the page, Save the song, because whenever you need something out of music for whatever reason, it can be sorted in 7 Seconds.
