Labour Party: Canvassing for Chepstow Castle By-election

Today was my first day out proper canvassing, doing #labourdoorstep – We were out in Garden City, Chepstow. It is part of the Chepstow Castle ward. Today was important as it was election day. We had a young lady candidate, Gemma Rosser, standing up against some pretty tough Conservative opposition, so our work today would count directly and be felt immediatey in the voting booth.

We met up at Chepstow branch HQ and were briefed on mainly how we should sbe discussing Gemma out of the doorstep. Catherine Fookes, our candidate for MP here in Monmoutshire was present and seemed to lead many of the discussions about our work plans. I went out and was shadowing more senior Labour Party members. I think it was Frances (John) Crook, Labour Councilor for Magor / Undy, who took me under his wing today and helped me out. I know John’s son quite well. He is an old drinking buddy of mine so we had something in common.

I followed my mentor and was surprised at how active the whole process is. I’ve done doorstep selling before – a gas / electric salesman over in Bristol – I have quite a lot of experience of cold callign etc. I can say that the reaction on the doorstep by people when they recognise that you are representing the Labour Party – is very welcoming indeed. People are genuinely pleased to see you and freely engage. It seemed more difficult drawing conversations to a close so we could move on.

The main fact we were checking was if the people we saw had voted for Gemma, or intended to vote for Gemma and if they knew where to go to vote etc. It’s about getting the vote out on the day.

It was all hustle bustle and the day went in a blur. It was good expereince to be out on an election day when it’s busy for the experience.

After the busy and energetic #labourdoorstep activity here in Chepstow Castle Ward, I decided to stop in at Wetherspoons in Chepstow for a quick pint and bumped into my old mate, Ben Luff, who had to listen to me extol the virtues of a Labour government…. Politics never stops!

In the early hours of the morning I was tuned in online, checking the results and was pleased to see that my work had been fruitful and that Gemma was elected for the Chepstow Castle Town Council seat. It was fruits for your work, immediately. I think I’m onto a winner here, Trig! Here’s to more future Labour victory!

Gemma Rosser’s election victry for Labour was mentioned in the Free Press newspaper:
