Labour Doorstep in Caldicot with Jessica Morden MP

This was my second day actually out doing #labourdoorstep – Today it was sunny Caldicot, my hometown. We met up at the local car park of Gray Hill surgery, near the town centre. We would be out today campaigning on behalf of our current MP, Jessica Morden, Newport East. It was too early yet to be mentioning Catherine Fookes and the forthcoming general election where she will be standing in the new enlarged Monmouthshire constituency. I think the rules actually forbid canvassing of candidates just at the moment in this area…. However, people are quite savvy and if a voter on the door asks us about Catherine then at least she is out there with us today, canvassing and can meet them direct.

Today was good. We covered a pleasant part of central Caldicot, near the school and doctors’ surgery. People were pleased to see us and most of them had very positive things to say about Jessica Morden. As the local MP she has been serving the people here for very many years and is popular, well-liked and well-known. It is surprising how many people who you do meet, as a canvasser, who have direct stories to tell about their politicians. It does surprise me the exact workload that drives these professional politicians. To be successful in this line of work it is clear to me that very hard, very intense, very difficult work is necessary.
