Ophelia is a young noblewoman from Denmark in Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Hamlet. Taylor Swift uses her here as the front portal to her new ‘Life of a Showgirl’ album that, since its release last week, has been achieving all sorts of landmark music industry records in terms of sales and streams and global popularity, driving our world headline star, Tay Tay, into new realms of dominance and mastery of her art.
The song, as an appetiser to the new, most complete masterpiece album, tests out Taylor’s new confidence in delivering as a singer. I saw her speaking, I think, on the Graham Norton TV show, here in the United Kingdom, about how she has gained a bit of confidence in her abilities and repertoire from doing such a globespinning, globespanning #ErasTour . The new producers on this album that she is working with, Max Martin and Shellback, offer up lush, dancey, catchy melodies and beats, yet in Ophelia, Taylor sings a wide range of challenging notes, out of the range of the backing music and takes us on a creative journey into her vocal capabilities. Yes, she may not be Whitney Houston just yet, and Whitney was always perhaps a more classic singer, honed by sixties icon, Dionne Warwick. Taylor delivers on a poetic scale with subtle and mesmerising lyrics that drive her wild #swiftie audience into ecstasy and rapture… She is becoming ever better in terms of her vocal quality and I dread to think of what future goals she will be setting herself as her projects grow ever more popular, challenging and divine-like in their inspiration and effect on the increasing and loyal fanbase.
This song, Ophelia, as an opener, does grow on you a lot the more you hear it and is very catchy and unique and does also have a most amazing choreographed video which #swifties are copying in their dancing TikTok droves. The album is a good one and if you are one of the minority of folks on this planet that hasn’t yet tested out ‘Life of a Showgirl’ on their soundsystems, then hurry up and get onto the buzz…. It’s the fresh new music, the global sound, the cutting edge of the entire industry and where it’s all at, whatever your beliefs are on that creative art that is music.
