At the start of the match, for the first fifteen minutes, Liverpool were totally dominant in possession, with Eintracht Frankfurt hardly touching the ball at all. Having said that though there was no end result and not really any clear cut chances on goal.
The bad news was that Jeremie Frimpong suffered a hamstring injury and had to leave the field. He does seem a bit injury prone since he has started with us. Let’s hope that it isn’t serious. Connor Bradley stepped in as a substitute replacement.
Unfortunately our bad run continued with Enitracht Frankfurt breaking the scoring duck first. Mario Götze played the ball through to Rasmus Kristensen, who drilled one past Giorgi Mamardashvili to score the opener.
A lot of our early joy seems to be coming down the left flank where Cody Gakpo seemed to be shining. Most attacks seem focussed on the left and the midfield is linking up nicely there.
Our best chance so far occurred at 32 minutes in the first half with Connor Bradley receiving a beautiful cross right onto his head inside the six yard box, yet frustratingly the keeper parried it wide when he nodded it down, goalwards.
A counter attack went well a couple of minutes later. The ball was banged forward after the defence rcovered it and went straight into the path of Hugo Ektiké at around the halfway line. He ran forward with just a one-on-one with the Frankfurt goalkeeper, separating him from success. The former Frankfurt man, kept his compusure and slotted it into the goal, bringing LFC back on level terms at 1-1.
After 38 minutes, Liverpool’s success continues. For our sixth corner of the game, the ball is delivered from the left and Virgil Van Dijk, comes thrusting forward into the six yard box, like a true giant, proud club captain and just forces his header straight past the helpless keeper. 2-1 Liverpool. We do deserve to be in front.
There is a nasty challenge by Konate on Koch whioch brings the game to a standstill just before half-time with the German physio being called onto the pitch.
Just before half-time, Liverpool get yet another corner, this time from the right. Dominik Szoboszlai delivers a fine cross and Konate comes steaming in a heads a bullet straight into the back of the net, a repeat really of the captain’s thrusting header. We are now comfortable and running away with the game at 3-1. The Frankfurt defence is pretty shocking, to tell the truth. It is no surprise that they are on a bad run of results.
The half-time whistle is blown and Liverpool are lucky to have had a good first half after a bit of a shocker to start with when they conceeded the first goal.
For the second half, Isak was sacrificed for Chiesa, who I feel has been looking relatively sharp so far this season. He proved me right almost jsut a few minutes into the second half with an ambitious, sort of overhead strike on goal, going narrowly wide.
At 63 minutes Connor Bradley had another great chance, letting loose a deflected Wirtz pass / shot out on the right flank and blasting it towards the goal for it to bounce of the post. If it had’ve gone in it would hjave been a real stunner. That’s his second good chance of the game. Surely he might score before the final whistle?
A few minutes later and Wirtz is down on the right flank, broken free with Gakpo running in on goal. It is perfect play and Wirtz derops the pass, with perfect weight, straight into the Dutch striker’s path for him to tap it into the goal. We are now well in front. It was Wirtz’s second assist of the game so maybe he is starting to show form, our German midfield playmaker for whom I have high hopes?
Yet another break forward for Liverpool down the right, ended in failure when Szoboszlai decided to pass the ball in for a striker rather than taking a shot on which he should have done as it was the right option. We are ebullient in our display now, getting forward in numbers and bulding confidence in our play, something we will hopefully take forward into the Premiership.
Dominik Szoboszlai was not yet done, however. With twenty minutes left, he gets the ball in a nice, central, open position, just outside the box asnd drills a shot straight past the keeper to his right hand side. 5-1. A rout!
Mo Salah comes on as a substitute for Hugo Ektiké and Gakpo is replaced by Alexis Macallister to close out the game. Also, Gomez comes on for Konate.
Right near the end Curtis Jones had it put right on a plate for him, inside the six yard box, but unfortunately, we couldn’t make it a magic six. Salah was looking hungry and desperate to score since he came on.
This is the third Champions League match in a row for Eintracht Frankfurt with a 5-1 result. Today, thimgs certainly didn’t go their way and Liverpool sort of showed that thye might have got over their form blip! A good, exciting and happy game to watch. #ynwa
We have Real Madrid at Anfield, next out in the Champions League – so that shall most certainly be a good game to look forward to. We shall be put to the test!
