Arne Slot was speaking ahead of the game and praising Hugo Ekitiké’s fitness levels and work rate and believes that it is this that has made him, apart from Erling Haaland, the league’s top scorer of outfield goals this season. His goal additions have certainly helped Liverpool to turn their form around and we are now unbeaten in six. Obviously there was bad news on the pitch last weekend when Alexander Isak, following scoring a much needed goal, went down. He later had to have surgery on a broken leg so will be out for a while. It’s all down to our Frenchman Ekitiké now, with the support from the bench of a relatively untested Chiesa. I think Chiesa looks exciting when he comes on and it would be nice to see him tested in a run of games, maybe? If Alisson gets a clean sheet today it will be his 100th for the Reds. It could also be the 100th league appearance for Ibrahima Konaté, should he be picked.
We have beaten Wolves in 16 of our last 17 games against them so that statistic speaks for itself. Wolves’ manager, Rob Edwards, has lost each of his six league games in charge of the club. The visiting side are rooted to the bottom of the Premiership with a mere two points thus far so whereas we think our season is bad, they have little hope. They are nine points off the penultimate side, Burnley. Liverpool are in sixth with 29 points, equalling the points total of both Man United and Chelsea, who sit above them. It’s all about a top four finish for us now. Wolves could be dangerous as they have nothing to lose and anything is possible in football. I hope that our defence has truly plugged the leaks in it by now. No time for switching off, whoever the opposition team might be. I would say that the atmosphere at Anfield will be charged at around the 20 minute mark as both sets of supporters will be loudly cheering Diogo Jota, who was a talisman for both clubs and is sorely missed. I’d say that our class and rejeuvenation and the fact we are at Anfield, during the festive season where fans are perhaps even ore joyous, it could spell danger for those wandering Midlands Wolves.
I’m hoping for Ekitiké to score at least one and for Liverpool to win the match. Should be an easy three points home win. The match kicks off at 3pm.
In team news, Jeremie Frimpong gets back into the starting XI and Chiesa also gets a start. Connor Bradley and Cody Gakpo make it back from injuries to take a seat on the bench.
Liverpool: Alisson, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez, Wirtz, Mac Allister, Chiesa, Jones, Ekitike, Frimpong, Gravenberch.
Subs: Mamardashvili, Woodman, Bradley, Gakpo, Robertson, Nyoni, Ramsay, Ngumoha, Lucky.
C’mon Redmen! #ynwa
