Review: Our Final Invention – Artificial Intelligence and The End of The Human Era – by James Barrat

This book is a quite alarming discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) and how it has the future potential to make the human race extinct. The concept of AGI or human level artificial intelligence is not thought to be that far off from being reality. It is the rise of ASI or Artificial Super Intelligence that could prove to be catastrophic to our society. The book draws on interviews with key figures from across the world of the development of these new systems. There are cutting edge scientists who have turned from being big advocates for AI to being now deeply concerned about the direction technology is taking us. The basic scenario is that as artificial intelligence gets stronger eventually it will ‘leap out of the box’ and start controlling factors essential for its own survival to the detriment of its human creators. Asimov’s 3 laws of robotics are seen as pure fiction. It does seem alarming that it is the likes of DARPA and foreign military defence budgets that are really driving and fuelling most of the international competitive quest for this computer holy grail. The book is written from quite a paranoid perspective and a lot of the same ideas are repeated throughout although I thought the book made conclusions without providing enough actual examples of the extinction scenario and how exactly it would happen. I think that AI could potentially be dangerous but equally, even after having read the evidence presented in this book I think that it is unlikely to cause our end as a species. I will look further into the problems of AI and future technology and the book was a good appetiser to put one in the right direction for this journey.
