Some places make you want to fill every minute. Monmouthshire makes you want to give yourself a little longer.
A little longer over lunch. A little longer beside the river. Another morning to explore a castle, wander through a market town or head into the hills.
Here in south-east Wales, we have the ingredients for a memorable escape: the Wye Valley, historic towns, countryside walks and local food and drink. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a family break or a few days outdoors, Monmouthshire deserves a place on your travel list.
Explore Caldicot: Castle Towers, Parkland and Coastal Views
Caldicot deserves a place on your itinerary. With a medieval castle, spacious country park and nearby walks beside the Severn Estuary, it offers plenty of reasons to stop and explore.
Start at Caldicot Castle and Country Park. The castle’s story stretches from its Norman origins through its life as a medieval stronghold to its restoration as a Victorian family home. Explore its towers and courtyard, then head into the surrounding parkland.
The country park covers 55 acres, with woodland, open spaces and the River Nedern running through it. Bring a picnic and give yourself time to enjoy the setting. General admission to the castle and park is free, although charges can apply for particular events; check seasonal castle opening times before visiting.
For a change of scenery, head to nearby Black Rock, outside the town near Portskewett. This picnic spot overlooks the Severn Estuary between the two Severn bridges, making it an appealing place for wide views, photography and a coastal walk. The Black Rock circular walk takes in a section of the Wales Coast Path.
For a longer outing, Visit Monmouthshire also lists a five-mile circular route linking Caldicot Castle and Black Rock. It’s a way to combine the area’s medieval heritage with its estuary landscape in one day.
History lovers can extend their visit to nearby Caerwent Roman Town. Its surviving town walls, excavated houses, marketplace and temple remains offer a glimpse of Roman life. Entry is free, making it another inviting stop on a break around Caldicot.
Discover the Wye Valley
Continue to Tintern, where wooded hills rise above the River Wye and the abbey gives the village its unmistakable silhouette. It’s a place to slow down, explore and leave time for a café or pub stop along the way.
Walkers have plenty of choice, from circular routes around the village to stretches of the Wye Valley Walk. Choose a route that suits your day: a shorter outing with lunch afterwards, or a longer walk through the valley’s woodland. Explore walking around Tintern.
Tintern Abbey remains a powerful reason to visit, although conservation work currently restricts access to parts of the site. Check Cadw’s visitor information before travelling.
Make Time for More Castles
If your ideal day out includes towers, stone walls and a little imagination, keep exploring.
Chepstow Castle commands a dramatic position above the Wye. Make it the centrepiece of a visit, then give yourself time to explore the town.
Raglan Castle offers another striking encounter with the county’s past. Its towers and courtyards make it an inviting stop for history lovers, photographers and families alike.
Pick a castle, explore properly and build the rest of the day around it. There’s always a reason to come back for another.
Bring an Appetite
Food should be part of your Monmouthshire itinerary.
Our farming heritage feeds a lively local food scene, with farmers’ markets in Abergavenny, Chepstow, Monmouth and Usk, alongside shops selling artisan produce. Browse, ask questions and take something home that reminds you of your visit. Discover local food and drink.
Abergavenny makes an appealing base for a food-focused break. Leave room in your plans for independent cafés, a relaxed lunch or a dinner worth lingering over. The county’s Abergavenny dining guide is a useful starting point.
There’s Welsh wine to discover, too. Sugar Loaf Vineyards near Abergavenny offers vineyard visits and refreshments, with tours available seasonally. Check the current visiting details and make it part of a leisurely afternoon.
Find Your Own Pace
A good holiday doesn’t always need a packed programme.
At Goytre Wharf, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal provides a setting for towpath walks, picnics and a waterside café stop. Historic lime kilns add another layer to the landscape, while boat hire offers a different way to spend time on the water.
Our towns reward the same unhurried approach. Put Usk or Monmouth on your itinerary and allow time to browse, stop for coffee and explore beyond your first destination.
Those pauses are often what make a break feel like a holiday.
Turn a Day Trip into a Weekend
There’s enough variety here to build a break around whatever you enjoy most.
For a Caldicot and Severnside escape, spend your first day exploring Caldicot Castle and Country Park, with an afternoon outing to Black Rock. The next day, discover Roman Caerwent or continue to Chepstow.
For a Wye Valley weekend, combine Chepstow and its castle with a day around Tintern. Choose a walk, explore the village and book somewhere local for dinner.
For a gentler escape, spend time in Usk, visit Raglan Castle and leave another morning for Goytre Wharf.
For a food-focused stay, base yourself around Abergavenny, explore the local dining scene and add a vineyard visit or countryside walk.
Choose one main outing each day and leave space around it. Staying overnight gives you time to enjoy the county without making every stop a race against the clock.
Come and Explore Monmouthshire
For me, the appeal of Monmouthshire is the combination: history, landscape, food and places where you can simply enjoy being there.
Come for Caldicot’s castle and country park. Come for the Wye Valley. Come for a meal that turns into a long afternoon. Then stay long enough to discover something you hadn’t planned.
Start with Visit Monmouthshire to find accommodation, attractions and upcoming events. Check opening times, book the experiences you want and give yourself a few days to explore.
