Mexico has changed a number of his norms over time. Mexico was never supposed to do anything to upset US national Security. Mexico has the oportunity to have a revolutionary foreign policy during the COld War… Mexico was made to feel better in 1994. Economic reasons it has to embrace the United States. There was to be an interdependence to develop. It worked well for some time. On the Mexican side there was always mistrust of the United States. US politicians had interest in Mexican domestic affairs.
Guns flow south into the hands of the cartels.
What can President Sheinbaum do to strengthen her country’s position with the United STates? The numbers have dropped from 2.5 million migranst down to 300000.
Mexico have sent 93 members of the cartels to US prisons.
There has been an aim to imrove the energy productivity matrix.
There are deicits running in Mexico of around 4-5%.
The key is to improve growth but this is not the direction that Mexico is travelling in.
Foreign direct investment is mainly reinvested earnings…
80% of Mexico’s foreign trade is concentrated on the United States.
The way the private sectors in both countries work together makes relations easier.
Mexico is prioritizing is relationship wth the US and Europe. Mexico is not really looking to China for trade. China does not buy from Mxico and exports are ten times higher from China to Mexico.
Sheibaum is deepemimg a security arrangement with the United States. She is having lots of phone conversations in whihc she talks her down. He believes though that the cartels run Mexico. The Mexican public do not like Donald Trump.
Designating the cartels as terrorist organizations affects the banks coming into the country.
There is a tradition in weak rule of law in Mexico. This can be fixed but it is not getting any better. Much of the law is a suggestion, it is not the law…. Judicial reform has moved us backwards.
Trump is limiting Mexican autonomy in terms of how it strikes up its international relations.
The seminar was insightful in that it laid out the Sheibaum presidency and how it interacts with the United States.
